When I was in Milford for my book signing this past weekend I took the chance to introduce This Promise Remains to the places nestled between its pages.

I thought readers may enjoy seeing the real places too! Over the next couple days I will share pictures of the places with excerpts from the book! Some places have long since been gone, but I may have some old photos that will suffice.

First up for places found in This Promise Remains is Turkey Creek! This creek runs along the property my grandparents owned. I spent many carefree childhood days spent exploring the timber and wading in the creek.

In fact, Garrett’s island was inspired by an experience my friend and I had. As little girls we found an island on our property right off of Turkey Creek. I found out this weekend, the little piece of ground was created for the ducks my grandpa raised. How special!

Unfortunately sometimes anger is easier and busy is heralded as better. But the novel Theo of Golden flips that script with its patient tenderness. It’s like a stroll in the park for your soul.

It’s a story that invites us all to pause and notice people and bless them with kindness.

As I was reading, it reminded me of two things-

Charlotte’s Web and 1 Corinthians 13.

Theo set an example of doing things in love like Corinthians tells us and he was like Charlotte speaking words of possibility over people who may otherwise see themselves in a more inferior light.

It’s easy to be cynical. It’s easy to be critical. There is the reality that not everyone chooses redemption or to live into their potential, but there is also the reality that the possibility of it goes up when someone chooses to believe good is possible. It’s harder to speak words of life and do it from a foundation of love. But those are powerful things!

And because I love discussing things further, there was a part in the story that a group of people in the novel were discussing value. This question was raised but never answered: “That is a most interesting phrase, ‘the value of things.’…Where does one go to learn the value of things?”

With his last breath, in the final moments of his life, Raymond handed Hugh a bloodstained journal and uttered the words, “Finish the story.”

Hugh wrestles deeply with survivors guilt. Especially when he comes home from WWII with a severe case of combat fatigue that almost sends him to an asylum.

But Raymond is a wise man and he knows the value of life. And light. And he sees the potential in people so he spends his last seconds on earth passing on hope to his dear friend. He trusts in the power of prayer and has faith that what he believes in has power to outlive him, shaping, changing, and restoring the people he cares about.

I don’t pretend to know why some survive and others don’t, but I do know as long as we have breath in our lungs, whether we feel we deserve it or not, God is still writing our story. And when our breath ceases, a legacy of light and goodness can outlive us.

Today as I remember all the people who gave their lives in service to our country, I am also saying a prayer for those who are struggling to believe they have a story worth finishing.

Do you find it easy or hard to notice and delight in the small generosities of life? I know I do, but the more I discipline myself to not only notice them, but also settle in them, the more I find this quote to be true.
