Worship is little moments. Worship is in the details, the mundane. When we see it like that, it becomes a lifestyle.
So what is worship? It’s our RESPONSE (Romans 12:1-2). It sounds simple, but it’s a heart thing. To God, worship is about why you’re doing something.
Worshiping God is being kind to your husband when he’s short with you, because God calls you to show kindness (Ephesians 4:32). Worshiping is working hard at your job, even when your co-workers encourage sub-par effort, because you work for the LORD and not man (Colossians 3:23). Worshiping is disciplining your children when it would be easier to give in, because that is what God considers wise (Proverbs 29:17).
We could go on and on, but the bottom line is, worship is little moments. Worship is in the details, the mundane. When we see it like that, it becomes a lifestyle. Striving to keep up a feeling and a certain level of expression on a Sunday morning is exhausting. Living your life in a way that honors the Lord shouldn’t be.
Notice I said “shouldn’t”. I said that because for some people it still is. There’s a “striving” factor that has yet to be put to bed. This brings us to another thing we can do to get motivated in the mundane, which is checking our motivation itself.
It is meant to be an overflow of the heart, not something on a checklist we feel guilty about if we don’t do. I think this is why it becomes so exhausting in the first place, since we’re trying to accomplish something. We want to give God what He has asked, and what He is so worthy of, and we focus on the fruit of worship instead of the root system.
Here’s the secret: the root of worship is gratitude. Gratitude must be our motivation. If we come with nothing to offer, it doesn’t matter. If we come so tired we don’t have words, it’s OK. He gave the greatest offering in His Son. When we look at that, we find our motivation.
My mom used to tell me to count my blessings. I’m sure we’ve all heard that once or twice. Even so, it wasn’t until one day when she made me do it out loud that I understood the power in it. It wasn’t until then I started to realize how big my God is and how small my problems are. It wasn’t until then I realized how truly good my God is and how absolutely WORTHY He is of all of my worship.
