For the longest time, I didn’t believe I was a journaler. I didn’t write in a daily diary and my handwriting is far from pretty. It wasn’t until I was asked a few times to do speeches on journaling that I began to wonder why people thought I journaled! As I prepared for these talks, I began to see that journaling has some stereotypes around it. If you, like me, have had the thought “I don’t journal”, I would ask you to stick with me today and not completely write journaling off–there are so many benefits from it! =
The two main areas of journaling that I practice are: Prayer Journaling and Journaling the Word. We will focus on Journaling the Word today using the TAP method.
If you are unfamiliar with the TAP method, it simply stands for: Truth, Application/Action, and Prayer. You can write as much or as little as you want. The TAP method is designed to go along with, and deepen, your time in the Word. You don’t have to write long thoughts, have perfect grammar, or even spend much time writing. But there are huge benefits of taking small amounts of time to jot down things you learn as you soak in God’s Word (even if it is simply bullet points).
Benefits of Journaling the Word:
- There is some sort of unexplained connection when we write down the truth. By simply writing out a Bible verse it can stick with you longer. I like to parallel it with singing. It is always beautiful to sit and listen to a group sing, but if they ask you to join in for a verse or two, you experience a deeper connection. So it is with writing down Bible verses and thoughts around your time in the Word.
- It helps bring focus and clarity. There are so many distractions fighting for our attention. As women, our brains can often be chaotic. When we take the time to write down a thought, a lie, or a question, we are bringing order and focus to our time in God’s Word.
- We can remember God’s faithfulness easier and in a much more real way. I like to call these Ebeneezer moments. As we write down the things God teaches us, we can look back and see how faithful God is. This builds our trust in His faithfulness to sustain us no matter what the future brings.
- We have “proof” of our own personal growth when satan comes tempting us. I don’t know about you, but satan comes knocking at my door holding out his own proof that I am just a big failure. Having written down thoughts as I spend time in the Word has helped me to remember the truth of God’s sanctification in my life.
Journaling can be such an incredible tool in our hands to deepen our relationship with God. It doesn’t take a good writer to experience these benefits. The TAP journal is designed as a simple solution to deepen your relationship with God through time in the Word. It will help you organize all your notes into one clean and simple area while allowing you to experience all the benefits of journaling
