I still remember the day we hopped in the van and began driving straight to a place that triggered many anxious feelings inside my heart. To say I was less than excited to go there is an understatement. Dread filled my heart.
Before we left I confided in a sister and asked for some prayers. After arriving at the destination, the first thing that happened as I walked through the doors, was something I will never forget.
A lady with a giant smile on her face came up to me and wrapped me in a big hug. She said someone told me you were coming and needed a hug. Welcome, we are so glad you are here. I wanted to melt in a pile of tears–right there. Someone cared enough about my terrified heart they made the effort to call someone I didn’t even know to shower love on me?
I will never forget that simple act of kindness. It held such deep meaning in my heart, and its impact has not lessened to this day. Making a phone call to tell someone to give me a hug doesn’t seem like much. In fact if I were the one doing it, I may think it really doesn’t matter in the big picture of life. But to me, close to 8 years later, I have yet to forget that moment. That simple act of calling a friend to encourage me will never leave me. I felt God’s love in that moment in a huge way. Don’t ever underestimate the power of small, seemingly insignificant, acts of service.
That incident has not been the only thing that has impacted me. There have been God breathed, encouraging words at time I needed them. Words like:
- “I see God working in your heart in amazing ways”
- “In life we have two options we can either become better, or bitter–I am so thankful to see you have allowed God to make you better.”
- “You have a heart of gold, thank you for being a virtuous woman.”
As the one saying these quick sentences, they are easy to say and then forget. They may not seem like much, but to the person God leads you to say certain things to (or do certain things for), they may never leave. They may impact them at just the right time and bring confidence and healing in ways you couldn’t imagine.
Our job isn’t to question how God works, our job is to faithfully follow Him–even when something seems simple and unimportant. God is at work–even in the small things. The unseen things.
Am I willing to open my hand to the Lord and offer Him all the skills and talents He has given me; to be used wherever He sees fit? A small letter of encouragement? A quick hug? A random act of kindness no one sees? Maybe these small, unseen moments are building HIs kingdom in ways we cannot comprehend. His will will be accomplished! Do I fight it because it doesn’t seem big–or important? Or do I willingly and joyfully use my skills to be used for His glory no matter what it looks like? Whether people see what we do or not, what matters is trusting God to make the impact. Trusting that God can use our gifts, talents, and callings in ways that we may never know. Keep doing the things He prompts you to sweet friend, you may never see the impact of your unseen acts of kindness.
