Hey friend, I see you. You desire get in and delight in God’s Word. I don’t think you would be here with me if you didn’t!
As long as I can remember I have desired to be in God’s Word. I loved Sunday School and the times my parents read to me and taught me about Jesus. I have prayed ever since I can remember. However, I have not always been in a state of delighting in and making God’s Word the most important part of my day. In my life (even though I have always desired God), I have experienced duty, drudgery, and delight as I carve out time to spend with Him. My personal testimony is one of growing from duty in God’s word to delight. While I delight in His word today, satan is not done fighting against me and my time with Jesus. Seasons change, circumstances change, and feelings fluctuate.
I wonder, are our stories much different? I believe you, as well, desire to daily take time for and delight in His Word. The frustrating thing is satan fights to keep you, and I, struggling in this area. He baits us with circumstances and feelings that hinder the knowledge that time with God is the most important part of our day. We believe it, but it doesn’t always reach our hearts. Just because you know God’s Word is the most important time in your day, and just because you know you should delight in it, that doesn’t always mean you feel those truths right?
I think it is safe to say that right now you are either in a state of desire, drudgery, or delight. Depending on different factors we can fluctuate between all of those. We may desire God, but maybe our hearts are too broken or our schedule is too full to find enough time to actually dive into the word; so we quickly skim or skip a few days here and there. Maybe we are in drudgery, where we daily do the tasks of getting in His Word, but it is out of duty, not delight. We check it off our “good christian” to do list. Or maybe we are in delight. We love getting in and learning God’s word, but the distractions of life at times can leave us frustrated that we aren’t getting as much out of this time, or in the way we want. Satan knows how important God’s word is so it doesn’t matter what stage we are in he wants to stifle it.
As I walk with God and learn from Him, I have found that time with Jesus isn’t about becoming perfect or fixing life, it’s about knowing God more so we can willingly be sanctified and matured. Life won’t ever be perfect or easy. Neither will we, that’s not the point. It’s about knowing and hearing the Savior’s voice so we can daily allow Him to be our strength and guide. Not spending time with Him is like saying we can do this life on our own. As we approach this topic, we need to separate our feelings from the facts. Our life with each other, with God, with Bible studies and with books, is not a ploy to be a fix, a cure all. It’s more about learning, growing, and maturing. It’s not a quick fix. It’s an ongoing hand-holding, “I’m here with you on this journey to heaven” kind of progress.
