Songs often get played on repeat in my home. Lately the song on repeat has been I Am Yours by Need To Breathe.
I love the whole song, but there is one lyric that always sticks out to me. “I’m a man whose one ambition is to dance with my divine.”
Oh how I wish I could paste that phrase on my heart and forever remember it. Until then I will listen to the song on repeat :).
As people, we have alot of ambitions. Ambitions are good things. They are callings from God.
The problem isn’t in the things God calls us to. The problem is when we pick up these ambitions as proof of our worth. When we become parazlyed by all the ways to be good enough, we forget to enjoy this life God is giving us.
As people our core need is to be loved. It’s no wonder that we easily pick up ambitions as a means to earn love. In all our frantic attempts to be enough and to earn love, we forget a major thing.
We are already loved, we don’t need to earn it.
The greatest love story of all time is Jesus. He gave His life for us. Through Him we have access to the Father who loves us beyond belief. He tells us this gift, this relationship we have with Him is not debt. He tells us that He delights in us, we are precious to Him. Not because we earned it, but because we are His.
We live in a broken world that screams the opposite message to us. It points out our flaws. It builds a model for us of what life “should” look like.
God does invite us down paths but it isn’t to see how good we can do; it is for us to fall more in love with Him. God invites us to a relationship. He created things for us to do, handcrafted, specifically for us to delight in. This process naturally brings glory to Him and increases the relationship we have with Him.
Our job isn’t to make the path smooth, or be perfect at it. Our job isn’t to be good enough. It is to follow God, trusting Him to lead us to the place that will be best for us.
If our ambition is to prove our worth in the things God calls us to, we will never feel enough. But if our greatest ambition is to “dance with the divine” we will find a peace and happiness because we know we are cradled in His love.
