One of the frustrating things about our ultimate hope and reward is that it is abstract.
We have never been to Heaven. We don’t completely grasp what it is like. We are promised it is there so we trust, hope, and believe in God’s Word. We believe, but we can’t see it yet. We walk toward heaven in hope. I cannot tangibly grab onto the hope of heaven God offers. I can tangibly hope for a date night, a skillet cookie, a cup of coffee, well-behaved kids (for five minutes). These things I can tangibly see. Heaven, I cannot.
Since Heaven is our ultimate goal, the thing we run this race for, our hope lies in the intangible–the eternal.
“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
It is so easy to focus on the temporary things. Think about it: tangible, temporary things are all around us. We feel comfortable in the temporary; we can often control the temporary. Temporary is often concrete.
But the things that are eternal– they are hard. They are abstract, we can’t completely wrap our minds around the eternal things and the value they hold. Everything as we know it comes to an end. It is impossible for us to completely grasp eternity and the eternal blessings God promises us.
This is why it is so hard to let go of the temporary things that bring temporary comforts and instead grab hold of the eternal things that hold eternal comfort. We can’t completely comprehend them and it feels scary. However, when we accept God’s word with a meek and humble heart, the Holy Spirit can work through us and give us strength to faithfully follow the eternal things trusting Him to work.
We have a deep longing in our heart that will only be truly filled when we arrive at our home in Heaven. Until then, we keep pressing into the Eternal things don’t always make sense. They are so valuable they cannot be purchased with any amount of money! Our longing for temporary things simply reflects the longing we have for Heaven. Let’s daily press into the Holy Spirit to pursue and grab hold of the eternal things.
